French outlet RMC Sport have reported that the 23-year-old winger will not be extending his current PSG contract, with talks having broken down entirely. No further discussions are planned. As a direct consequence, he is reportedly no longer considered untouchable by the Parisian club, which is about as clear a signal as you can get that a sale is possible.

Barcola has two years remaining on his deal, and Liverpool's interest in him is well-documented. The Reds have been actively looking for wide reinforcements following Mohamed Salah's departure, and the France international fits the profile. PSG, for their part, are said to be valuing him at around £145million, which is a significant figure by any measure. Whether Liverpool are willing to go anywhere near that number remains to be seen, but the direction of travel on Barcola's side is clear enough.

Interestingly, there is a subplot here involving Yan Diomande that could actually work in Liverpool's favour. The Reds had previously shown interest in the RB Leipzig teenager, but were unwilling to meet Leipzig's asking price. PSG were then reported to have agreed personal terms with Diomande themselves — only for the 19-year-old to subsequently reach an agreement with Real Madrid instead. That is quite the twist. With PSG now missing out on their own attacking target, they may find themselves in a more complicated position when it comes to deciding whether to sell Barcola. A club that cannot bring in a replacement is naturally more reluctant to let one of its prized assets walk out the door — but equally, Barcola's own unwillingness to commit to a new deal changes the conversation significantly.

Elsewhere on the transfer front, Italian outlet Tuttojuve have reported that Liverpool have stepped up their interest in Francisco Conceicao. The Portuguese winger has been a key figure for Juventus under Luciano Spalletti, but with the Serie A club under financial pressure and reportedly needing to sell in order to buy, a deal could be on the table for the right price. Tuttojuve claim that Liverpool view Conceicao as someone who could make a meaningful contribution to the squad, and crucially, the player himself is said to be open to moving to England. It is worth treating Italian outlet reports with the usual degree of caution, but this one has enough detail to take seriously.

Meanwhile, Monaco's Maghnes Akliouche continues to hover on the periphery of Liverpool's summer planning. He is reportedly of interest to the Reds, though PSG are also said to be in the running, which complicates things.

Away from the transfer activity, Andoni Iraola has been speaking with a clarity and honesty that is genuinely refreshing. The Liverpool head coach has called on his senior players to show vulnerability and lead the group through what he acknowledges will be an imperfect process. Adding some external perspective, former Everton manager Sean Dyche has given his take on what Liverpool supporters can expect under Iraola. His assessment is blunt but ultimately complimentary. Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, Dyche drew on his own experience of facing Iraola's Bournemouth side. "Iraola basically plays lower league football, but at a high level," Dyche said. "They turn you and turn you, and force you into submission.
