It has been quite a week to be a Liverpool supporter. A 4-2 defeat to Leeds United in the final match of the pre-season tour of the United States did nobody any favours, and the noise coming out of that result has only amplified the already growing calls for serious transfer business to get done before the window slams shut.

Andoni Iraola's side were genuinely impressive in the first half against Leeds, cruising to a 2-0 lead and looking every bit the dominant force you would hope to see heading into a new campaign. Then came the second half. A heavily rotated side were overrun after the break, and Leeds ran out 4-2 winners to hand the Basque head coach his first defeat since taking charge. It was a sobering end to the American trip, and the mood amongst supporters reflected that.

The Reds have brought in just one signing so far this summer in Spanish winger Victor Munoz, with defender Jeremy Jacquet also arriving following an agreement struck back in February. For a squad that needs genuine depth and quality added in both defence and attack, that is slim pickings. The pressure is on.

So the timing of two significant transfer developments on Monday is not without its intrigue.

First, the Barcola situation. Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that fresh contact between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain is being prepared for this week. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano said: "New contacts [will be] prepared between Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain." He added that "conversations will continue next week", though he was equally clear that no agreement is anywhere near being reached. The French winger is said to be keen on a move to Anfield despite interest from elsewhere, including Arsenal, but PSG are not making this easy. The Parisian club are reportedly asking in the region of £145 million for the French international, a figure Liverpool are understood to be working hard to reduce significantly. Romano's assessment was blunt: the deal "depends on Liverpool, on how much they want to spend." It could, he suggested, drag on throughout the summer. That is not exactly the kind of clarity you want, but at least the dialogue is continuing.

Then there is the Gakpo story, which adds a rather uncomfortable layer to all of this.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly identified Cody Gakpo as a target, with Sky Sports indicating that Liverpool would only sanction his departure if a suitable replacement was already secured. That caveat matters enormously. Gakpo still has four years left on his contract at the club, and talkSPORT has suggested Liverpool would want around £70 million to even consider letting him go. The Reds are not looking to sell him. That much is clear.

But the fact that the conversation is even happening tells you something about where we are.

Gakpo has been a genuinely important player for this football club. He arrived from PSV Eindhoven in January 2023 and has gone on to make 180 appearances in a Liverpool shirt, scoring 50 goals and registering 23 assists. Last season alone he made 52 appearances, contributing nine goals and six assists, playing his part in the Premier League title win in 2025. That is not the profile of a player you casually move on.

But the scenario that would emerge should he leave without a replacement being brought in is a deeply concerning one. Liverpool would be left relying on teenage prospect Rio Ngumoha and new arrival Victor Munoz out wide. With the level of competition ahead, that is not a position any Liverpool supporter wants to find themselves in come the start of the season.

Spurs, for their part, have been extraordinarily active this summer. Roberto De Zerbi's side have already spent £237 million in this window, and the manager was in bullish mood when speaking to football.london last week. "The transfer market, it's not finished for sure, but we completed 60 per cent of our project in the transfer market. Now we have another bomba!" De Zerbi said. That confidence suggests Spurs see real opportunity in this window, and if they are identifying Gakpo as part of that remaining 40 per cent, Liverpool will need to be firm.

The picture that is emerging this week is one of a club at a crossroads in the transfer market. The Barcola talks are moving, however slowly. The Gakpo links from Spurs are a reminder that standing still is not an option. Liverpool need to add quality. They need to do it soon. And they need to do it without inadvertently weakening what is already here.

The next round of contact with PSG this week could tell us a great deal about exactly what kind of summer this is going to be.
