Jurgen Klopp has delivered a ringing endorsement of Florian Wirtz ahead of this summer's World Cup, believing the German midfielder has everything needed to shine on football's biggest stage.

The former Liverpool boss was full of praise for the £116million summer signing, who has endured a challenging debut campaign at Anfield. Wirtz caught the eye in Saturday's commanding 3-1 victory over Crystal Palace, capping off proceedings with a spectacular late strike.

"I hope Flo Wirtz will have a fantastic, fantastic World Cup," Klopp said. "I think he has everything you need to be a standout player. I don't want to put any pressure on the boy. I really think he showed already how good he can be in a difficult season."

The Bayer Leverkusen recruit will be expected to play a pivotal role for Germany in the tournament across the USA, Canada and Mexico. His performance against Crystal Palace, alongside Alexander Isak who opened the scoring, provided a glimpse of what Liverpool's most expensive summer acquisitions can offer when firing on all cylinders.

Both players have struggled to find consistency under Arne Slot this season, but their weekend display has prompted widespread attention. The pair have only started together on eight occasions this campaign, with Liverpool claiming victory in five of those matches - a statistic that will give the Dutch manager food for thought.

Virgil van Dijk has backed the duo to come good, emphasising the long-term vision behind their arrivals. "That was always the plan," the captain explained. "These two particular players have been brought to the club to make an impact and it's not been an easy season for anyone, including those two, but you see the quality they have."

The defender stressed the importance of development and understanding what it takes to be a Liverpool player. "It is about keeping developing, knowing what it takes to be a Liverpool player not only on the pitch but off it as well, look after yourself and try to be, each and every three or four days, the absolute best of yourself."

Van Dijk didn't mince his words about the season's standards, adding: "They have to realise that. Keep going, four more games, qualifying for the Champions League is still the main target now, World Cup then we have to be working very hard to make sure next season is not like this season because it is unacceptable."

Whilst player development remains a priority, Slot faces potential disruption to his backroom setup with Giovanni van Bronckhorst reportedly a target for Feyenoord. The assistant coach, who joined last summer as John Heitinga's successor, could be tempted by a technical director position at his former club.

This would mark the second consecutive summer that Slot has lost a key assistant, following Heitinga's departure to Ajax. Van Bronckhorst previously guided Feyenoord between 2015 and 2019 and came through their youth ranks as a player, making any potential return emotionally significant.

Reports from the Netherlands suggest the former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder would welcome a move back to Rotterdam. However, Liverpool are yet to receive any formal offer for his services, leaving the situation fluid heading into the summer.

The speculation comes amid a season of inconsistency for the Reds, though Slot retains the full backing of Fenway Sports Group for the campaign ahead. With four matches remaining and Champions League qualification still the primary objective, stability in the dugout remains crucial.

As Liverpool prepare for Sunday's clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford, the focus will be on building momentum from Saturday's performance whilst navigating the uncertainties that surround the summer ahead.
