PSG blink first on Barcola
After months of Liverpool circling without getting close enough to strike, the Barcola saga has finally shifted in a meaningful way. PSG, who had been holding firm at around £145m for the 23-year-old French international, are now said to be willing to accept somewhere between £110m and £120m, a concession the Parisian club are apparently framing as a "small gesture" to encourage Liverpool to push harder for a deal. French outlet Jeunes Footeux broke the development, and transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has followed up by suggesting the move will now "accelerate" with Liverpool actively "pushing" to get it across the line before the September 1 deadline.
Before anyone gets too carried away, there is a caveat worth remembering. The same French publication is also clear that PSG "are under no obligation to sell" and will not be going any further with their generosity. So this is not a club in distress offloading an asset. It is a club that has decided a fee in the £110m to £120m bracket represents fair value and is prepared to do business at that level. Whether Liverpool feel the same is the question that will define this window. Supporters who watched the 2-0 victory over Como at the weekend, in which Andoni Iraola fielded an experienced starting XI, will be hoping that a gap in the forward line is left open specifically for Barcola to fill.
The Alisson saga that almost was
While the Barcola story rumbles on, a fascinating subplot from earlier in the summer has now come fully into focus. Juventus made a move for Liverpool's number one, Alisson, and according to reporter Gianluca Di Marzio, things got considerably further than anyone publicly knew at the time. Speaking on his podcast, Di Marzio revealed that Alisson and the Serie A side "had already reached an agreement" on personal terms, and that the 33-year-old goalkeeper had even gone as far as choosing his shirt number in Turin.
That is not a casual enquiry. That is a transfer that was well on its way to happening. Liverpool, however, were having none of it. The club opted to keep hold of their number one, extended his contract, and Juventus were left to look elsewhere. They eventually turned their attention towards Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez, though that situation has its own complications, with Villa closing in on Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Parma and Tottenham's Guglielmo Vicario reportedly heading to Turin on loan instead.
Alisson speaks, and the message is clear
For all the noise around his future, Alisson himself sounded nothing like a man who had one foot out of the door when he spoke after Sunday's friendly victory over Como. He was measured, focused, and clearly bought into what Iraola is building at the club.
"All the boys did well, the back four did really well, the players in midfield run a lot and fight a lot to get the results and that's the spirit we have to keep on going for the next games," he said. "I am really excited and looking forward, but [with] feet on the ground. We dream big but we work hard. That's the thing we have to do. We still have things to improve and don't have consistency for the full game, but we are going to get there."
It is the kind of quote that tells you everything about the mentality inside the dressing room right now. Liverpool have a goalkeeper who is fully committed, a new manager beginning to stamp his identity on the squad, and a potentially transformative attacking signing edging closer by the day. The pieces are moving, and the next few weeks will tell us exactly what this Liverpool side is going to look like.
