Why Liverpool's pursuit of Diomande was always going to fall short

For all the effort Liverpool put into chasing Yan Diomande this summer, it turns out the destination was never really in doubt. The 19-year-old Ivory Coast international had his heart set on Real Madrid long before the deal was done, and his agent has now said as much publicly. Speaking to El Chiringuito, Nathan Campbell of Roc Nation Sports was refreshingly direct: the moment Real Madrid came calling, every other conversation became irrelevant.

"As soon as he knew that Real Madrid were interested, as I've said several times, he said he wanted to go to Real Madrid and that it was his dream. There were no doubts and no questions," Campbell explained. That is about as clear a statement of intent as you will ever hear from an agent, and it confirms what some had suspected, Liverpool were chasing a player whose mind was already made up.

What Liverpool actually put on the table

It is worth acknowledging that Liverpool were serious here. They communicated a willingness to bid £86m to RB Leipzig as far back as June, which is not the kind of figure you throw around without genuine conviction. For a while, it appeared as though PSG might also be in the frame, with Diomande privately expressing interest in moving to the Champions League holders at one stage. In the end, though, neither club could compete with the pull of the Bernabeu.

Real Madrid secured their man for £120m, a significant step up from what Liverpool had been willing to spend. Campbell made clear that once Real Madrid sat down at the negotiating table, the deal moved quickly and smoothly. "It was a pleasure to close the deal," he said, before outlining ambitions that stretch well beyond club football, including the Golden Boy award this year and, eventually, the Ballon d'Or. For a teenager with that level of self-belief and those kinds of targets, the allure of Madrid is hardly a surprise.

Where Liverpool go from here

Liverpool will not be losing sleep over this one for long. The club are set to wrap up a £123m deal for PSG's Bradley Barcola, which would represent a significant statement of intent in the wide areas. That said, the source material indicates Liverpool are still actively seeking another winger, with Manchester City reportedly in talks to sign the £85m-rated Cody Gakpo, a development that will have implications for Liverpool's own squad planning.

Missing out on Diomande stings a little, especially given how early Liverpool moved, but recruitment rarely follows a straight line. The Barcola deal, if it completes as expected, suggests the club's business this window is far from finished, and the real story of Liverpool's summer might only be fully written once the window closes.
