Steven Gerrard knows a thing or two about Anfield farewells. Now he's making sure Mohamed Salah gets it right when Jordan Henderson returns.
Speaking to Gerrard in a TNT Sports interview, Salah revealed his frustration that Henderson never received the send-off he deserved when leaving Liverpool. The Egyptian is determined to put that right when Brentford visit on the final day.
"I think for the last game of the season against Brentford, the people in the city know how much it meant to Hendo being here," Salah explained. "[He was] captain of the club, here longer than me, Robbo [Andy Robertson] Virg [Virgil van Dijk], he did not get the farewell he deserved."
It's a sentiment that cuts deep. Henderson's departure to Al-Ettifaq was rushed, clinical, lacking the emotion that should have marked the end of such a significant chapter. Salah sees it clearly: "I don't know how the club is going to manage it, I have no plan but I really wish they do something special for him because he has been one of the best players at this club and without him, we don't achieve what we achieved."
Gerrard's advice was typically direct and heartfelt. "Listen, the fans I'm sure absolutely idolised Henderson, just like yourself, get him next to you at the end of the game if you can, get him involved," the Liverpool legend instructed.
Salah's response revealed just how much Henderson meant to those who shared a dressing room with him. "I really hope so, maybe people not in the dressing room [know how important he was], but you were aware of it as you played with him and he loved the club. So I really wish they do something for him and the fans can also do something special. Because this is Liverpool and we do it this way."
That final line hits differently. This is Liverpool and we do it this way. It's about respect, about recognising service, about understanding what the shirt means. Henderson embodied all of that during his time at Anfield.
Gerrard knows Henderson better than most, having managed him at Al-Ettifaq after signing him in summer 2023. Though Gerrard's stint in Saudi Arabia lasted just six months before his move to Ajax, he witnessed firsthand Henderson's commitment and character.
Henderson's journey since leaving Liverpool has been eventful. After his brief Middle East adventure, he returned to the Premier League with Brentford ahead of this season. Injury has kept him out for the last three weeks, but he's on track to return during this campaign.
Even if Henderson doesn't make the matchday squad or remains unused on the bench, the expectation is he'll be back on Merseyside when Brentford arrive. The symbolism alone would be powerful.
For Salah, this final day carries extra weight. It will be his last ever appearance in a Liverpool shirt, assuming he's fit enough to feature. His availability was questioned after being forced off with injury last weekend, but confirmation has come that he's expected to play again this season. Salah even told Gerrard he could return before the Brentford clash.
The timing feels poetic. Salah's Liverpool farewell intertwined with Henderson's overdue recognition. Two players who gave everything to this club, one getting the send-off the other was denied.
Gerrard's guidance to Salah wasn't just tactical advice. It was about understanding Liverpool's soul, about recognising that some moments transcend football. Henderson deserved better when he left. Now there's a chance to make it right.
Anfield will be watching to see if Liverpool truly does do it their way when the final whistle sounds against Brentford.
