Inglethorpe refuses to stop scoring

Five goals in four matches is a return that any striker at any level would be quietly pleased with. For a 17-year-old still cutting his teeth in Academy football, it is something rather special. Finn Inglethorpe added another brace to his tally on Saturday as Liverpool's U18s ran out 4-2 winners away at Wolves in the U18 Premier League North, and the manner of his goals will have turned a few heads.

Inglethorpe opened the scoring and then saved the best for last, wrapping up the win with a shot from 45 yards as Simon Wiles's side recovered from a wobble that had seen Wolves haul themselves level at 2-2. Erik Farkas had put Liverpool two ahead before efforts from Clive Oduor and Dapo Anunlopo brought the hosts back into it, but Inglethorpe set up substitute Zak Coxon to restore the lead with three minutes remaining before putting the result beyond doubt with that stunning long-range finish. At 17 and already with six goals for the season, the kid looks seriously hungry.

Danns edges closer after injury setback

Over at the U21s, Sunday's Premier League 2 fixture at Kirkby brought more encouraging news. Jayden Danns made his first start of the season, featuring for the opening 45 minutes against Leeds United as he continues to build his way back from a hamstring problem. The 20-year-old had previously come off the bench at Goodison, so stepping into the starting XI represents another step forward in what has been a frustrating period.

Danns already has three goals in ten senior appearances for the club, and the aim now is clear: get sharp, get fit, and catch the eye of head coach Andoni Iraola. Breaking back into first-team contention will not be straightforward, but the talent has never been in question. The coming weeks will be about minutes and rhythm, and Sunday added a little more of both.

Will Wright was the match-winner in that U21 victory over Leeds, by the way, helping himself to two goals after the visitors had gone ahead through Carrick Njinko just after the interval. Wright levelled from the spot after Isaac Mabaya was fouled in the area, and then converted a low cross from Joe Bradshaw with 12 minutes left to complete the comeback. The 18-year-old is now scoring in back-to-back matches having also found the net on the opening day against Everton.

A UEFA Youth League draw to whet the appetite

Friday's Champions League draw did not just hand the senior side their group-stage opponents. Liverpool's U19s now know what the UEFA Youth League first stage has in store for them, and it is quite the collection of fixtures. They will host Atletico Madrid, Villarreal and Porto at home, whilst trips to Austria to face LASK of Linz, Istanbul to take on Fenerbahce and Belgium to play Club Brugge await on the road.

For young players looking to test themselves against top European opposition, it does not get much better than that kind of exposure. Trips to Istanbul and Bruges alone will be experiences these lads carry with them regardless of results. If the current Academy form is anything to go by, though, results might just take care of themselves.
