A winger spreading his wings in League One
Kieran Morrison's development takes a significant step forward this season after Liverpool confirmed the 19-year-old winger has joined League One side Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan. It's the kind of move that makes sense for everyone involved. Morrison got his first taste of senior football in the Carabao Cup against Crystal Palace at Anfield back in October, and after a prominent campaign with the under-21s, a full season of competitive football at a proper club is exactly what he needs next.
The Manchester-born winger has been part of the Liverpool set-up since under-14 level and signed a new deal in May, so the club clearly believe in what he can offer long-term. He also earned his first senior international cap for Northern Ireland in June, capping what has been a genuinely encouraging few months. There's real substance here, not just potential.
Morrison was candid and enthusiastic when speaking to Sheffield Wednesday's official website after completing the move: "It's a massive club with great history and even better fans, so I'm glad to get it over the line, and I'm excited to play in front of everyone. Everyone knows that the rebuild is now and I want to be part of it. It's a great squad in a competitive league but I feel like we can do really well in this league and I want to help in any way possible." He also offered a telling insight into the conversation that convinced him: "Henrik was speaking to me and just gave me his idea of what he wants to happen, and he sold it to me. I've just wanted it to come ever since. He wasn't really talking about my footballing ability, he was just talking to me as a person. He wants me to become a better person, so that was eye-opening because I didn't expect it from the gaffer."
Ramsay's Anfield story drawing to a quiet close
Whilst Morrison's loan feels like the beginning of something, Calvin Ramsay's situation carries a very different weight. The Scottish right-back will spend the final year of his Liverpool contract north of the border at St Mirren, with the club having confirmed he will not be offered a new deal at Anfield. His four senior appearances since joining from Aberdeen for an initial £4.2m in June 2022 tell their own story.
Ramsay is 23 and was the SPL Young Player of the Year before Liverpool came calling three years ago. He arrived with genuine pedigree and real promise, and for a period he was a regular presence in matchday squads towards the end of last season. But consistent first-team football was always going to be difficult to come by, and ultimately it never materialised in any meaningful way. That is a tough reality for a player who, at his age, still has plenty of time to rebuild elsewhere.
With his contract expiring next summer, he will be free to speak to other clubs from January. A return to Scottish football at St Mirren gives him the platform to play regularly and remind people what he can do. Whether this season reignites his career elsewhere remains to be seen, but the Liverpool chapter is effectively over.
Two very different roads from Anfield
Taken together, these two departures paint a clear picture of where Liverpool are in their thinking. Morrison is a prospect they believe in, packaged off with care and purpose to get the right experience at the right level. Ramsay is a situation the club are managing respectfully but realistically, giving him the chance to finish his contract somewhere he can actually play.
For Morrison, Sheffield Wednesday and a full League One season is a proper examination. If he can perform consistently week in, week out at that level, the conversation about his Liverpool future will be a much more interesting one when he returns.
